The Toronto Blue Jays begin the second half of the season facing one of their highest totals of the season.
The Blue Jays are +230 away underdogs while the New York Yankees are -270 favorites with an 11-run total on the MLB odds for Friday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The Blue Jays have lost their last eight away games as a moneyline underdog of +200 or more, whereas the Yankees are 6-1 in their last seven home games as a favorite of -200 or farther into minus money.

Toronto is also 3-7 in its last 10 games as away underdogs, with six games finishing OVER and an average total of 11.8. The Yankees are 9-1 in their last 10 games as home favorites, according to the OddsShark MLB Database, with six games finishing OVER and an average total of 11.6.
The high total reflects largely on the struggles of Blue Jays starting pitcher Aaron Sanchez (3-12 record, 6.16 earned-run average, 7.5 strikeouts per nine innings). The Blue Jays are 3-7 in  Sanchez’s last 10 away-underdog starts, with eight of those games finishing OVER. For that totals trend to continue, however, the Blue Jays’ hitters will need to do some damage against Yankees starter Domingo German (10-2, 3.67, 9.8 SO/9), who has had the total finish UNDER in five consecutive home starts.
Clayton Richard (1-5, 6.23, 4.4 SO/9) faces J.A. Happ (7-4, 5.02, 7.1 SO/9) in a pitching matchup of left-handers on Saturday. Richard has a 3.63 ERA in 17.2 career innings against the Yankees. The total has gone UNDER in five of Happ’s eight starts at home this season.
Marcus Stroman (5-9, 3.18, 7.0 SO/9) is matched against Masahiro Tanaka (9-5, 3.86, 7.7 SO/9) in Sunday’s series finale. Stroman has a 6.37 ERA in 41 career innings at Yankee Stadium, which runs up against a trend of the total finishing UNDER in seven of his last 10 starts when Toronto was an away underdog. The total has also finished UNDER in five of Tanaka’s last eight starts as a home favorite.
This series is part of a 10-game Blue Jays road trip that also includes a four games against the Boston Red Sox, beginning Monday, followed by a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers.
