The longest-serving Toronto Blue Jay has been designated for assignment.
On Saturday morning, the Blue Jays announced that they designated Tim Mayza for assignment and recalled José Cuas.
Tim Mayza was drafted all the way back in 2013 with the 355th overall pick in the 12th-round. He made his big league debut in 2017, becoming an AAAA reliever until the 2019 season, where he became a mainstay.
That season, he posted a “meh” 4.91 ERA and a 4.73 FIP in 51.1 before blowing out his UCL and undergoing Tommy John surgery, missing the entirety of the 2020 season.
Mayza was a whole new pitcher once returning in 2021 though, posting a 3.40 ERA and a 3.09 FIP in 53 innings pitched, along with a 27.1 K% and a 5.7 BB%. The following season was better, posting a 3.14 ERA and a 3.98 ERA in 48.2 innings pitched, along with a 22.8 K% and a 6.2 BB%.
His magnum opus as a Blue Jay though was the 2023 season. Not only was he one of Toronto’s best relievers, but he was one of baseball’s best relievers, posting a 1.52 ERA and a 2.60 FIP in 53.1 innings pitched, allowing just two home runs all season.
But relievers are volatile, as we learned with Mayza’s 2024 season. Prior to him being designated for assignment, Mayza had an 8.03 ERA and a 4.90 FIP in 24.2 innings pitched, along with a career-worst in K% (13.2%) and a high BB% of 9.9%. Despite his high usage, he wasn’t able to turn it around.
It wouldn’t be surprising if a team looks to trade for him and in reality, he’ll likely find success with whatever team he ends up on.
To replace Mayza, the Blue Jays called up José Cuas, who was claimed off waivers about a week ago. This season with the Chicago Cubs, Cuas posted a 7.43 ERA and a 6 FIP in 13 innings pitched. However, he had a 3.99 ERA and a 4.60 FIP in 65.1 innings pitched in the majors last season. We’ll see what he can do with the opportunity.
