The Toronto Blue Jays have made a roster move.

On Monday afternoon, the team announced via their social media that they have placed Alek Manoah on the 60-day Injured List, opening up a spot on the 40-man roster for Richard Lovelady.

The Blue Jays 2019 first-round pick had a rough 2023 season after two great seasons to begin his career. It looked as if Manoah was back on track in 2024, posting a 3.70 ERA and a 5.18 FIP in 24.1 innings pitched, but he was pulled from his May 29 start and received Tommy John surgery on Jun. 17, 2024.

For the first time in almost a year, <a href="https://bluejaysnation.com/news/report-blue-jays-alek-manoah-set-to-throw-off-the-mount-for-the-first-time-since-tommy-john-surgery">Manoah pitched from a mound on Mar. 14</a> and said himself that he’s targeting an August return. By placing him on the 60-day Injured List, the Blue Jays can add a player to the 40-man roster. Enter Lovelady.
Lovelady was selected in the 10th round of the 2016 draft by the Kansas City Royals. He made his debut with the team in 2019, posting a 7.65 ERA and a 4.16 FIP in 20 innings pitched. Lovelady’s best season was in 2021 with the Royals, posting a 3.48 ERA and a 3.85 FIP in 20.2 innings pitched, along with a  27.4 K% and a 7.1 BB%.
In 2023, Lovelady pitched 23.1 innings with the Oakland Athletics where he had a 4.63 ERA and a 4.54 FIP in 34.1 innings pitched. Last season, Lovelady split his time between the Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay Rays, where he had a 4.46 ERA and a 3.92 FIP. 
With the addition of Lovelady to the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays now have four left-handed relievers to use in their bullpen. Brendon Little will more than likely make the 26-man roster on Opening Day, but the team also has Easton Lucas and Josh Walker for depth. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Jays also added fellow non-roster invitee Ryan Yarbrough to the 40-man roster as well.
