It’s the first road trip of the season for the Toronto Blue Jays, and they begin the weekend with an afternoon contest against the New York Mets.
The Mets were an exciting team this past winter, bringing back Pete Alonso while also signing Frankie Montas, Clay Holmes, Griffin Canning, A.J. Minter, Ryne Stanek, Nick Madrigal (IL), and Juan Soto, who inked the largest contract in professional sports history with his 15-year pact. New York made it to the postseason through the NL Wild Card after posting an 89-73 record and eventually bowed out in the NLCS to the Dodgers, who ended up winning the whole thing. This new and improved roster looks to give the Mets a fighting chance to contend again.
To begin the year, Toronto boasts a strong 5-2 record that started off rocky against Baltimore but culminated in a three-game sweep of the Nationals earlier this week. Contributions are coming from outside of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Anthony Santander, and the team continues to find ways to put the ball in play, led by George Springer, Andres Gimenez, and Bo Bichette.
New York sits third in the NL East with a 3-3 record, dropping their opening weekend series to the Houston Astros before winning two of three on the road in Miami. Injuries to Montas and Sean Manaea have hurt the rotation, and the squad is also without Jeff McNeil and Francisco Alvarez. Soto has been alright at the plate, snatching up five hits through 21 at-bats that includes a double and a home run, but opposing pitchers won’t come near him, with six walks already on the season. Leading the charge at the plate is Alonso, who has two home runs and eight RBIs out of the gate.
On the mound, the Blue Jays will be sending Kevin Gausman for the Friday contest, while the Mets are countering with right-hander Tylor Megill.
Gausman was stellar in his 2025 debut, holding the Orioles hitters to three hits and two runs across six innings with one walk and four K’s. Megill was equally impressive in his debut as well, fanning six Astros batters across five innings while allowing three hits and one earned run.
