The Toronto Blue Jays’ recent track record as an underdog should be taken into account at a time when any sense of routine has been thrown out of whack.
After four days without playing due to postponements caused by a coronavirus outbreak among the Miami Marlins, the Blue Jays are a +150 road underdog with the Atlanta Braves coming back as a -180 favourite with a 9.0-run total on the MLB odds for Tuesday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The Blue Jays are 7-13 in their last 20 away games as a moneyline underdog of +140 to +175, with the total going OVER in 11 of those matchups.
Righthander Matt Shoemaker (0-0, 1.50 earned-run average) is expected to start for the Blue Jays in Tuesday’s series opener opposite Atlanta lefthander Max Fried (1-0, 2.31). Shoemaker pitched well in his only start so far this season on July 25, limiting the Washington Nationals to one run and three hits across six innings. The total has gone UNDER in four of his last six starts at sports betting sites. The Braves are 12-4 in Fried’s last 16 starts when they were a home favourite, with the total going UNDER in six of the eight most recent starts in that sample.
Hyun Jin Ryu (0-0, 8.00) is then in line to start on Wednesday opposite Sean Newcomb (0-0, 8.22) in an all-lefthander pitching matchup. Ryu, who won the National League ERA crown with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2019, has a 2.73 ERA in five career starts against Atlanta, limiting hitters to a .603 OPS. Newcomb has exhibited issues with command of his curveball and changeup in both of his starts, and the total has gone OVER in seven of his last 10 starts at home.
Rookie righthander Nate Pearson (0-0, 0.00) is Toronto’s probable pitcher for Thursday, while Atlanta has Touki Toussaint (0-0, 8.10) slated to take the mound. Pearson threw five shutout innings in his MLB debut against the Washington Nationals on July 29. Toussaint, for his part, is coming off a four-scoreless-inning effort in his last outing against the New York Mets last Saturday.
Blue Jays closer Ken Giles (right forearm strain) is out indefinitely. Toronto has already had two late-game collapses in the seven games it has completed.
Toronto’s next scheduled series is a three-game set against the Boston Red Sox that begins Friday at Fenway Park. They are scheduled to host Miami for three games at their temporary home stadium at Sahlen Field in Buffalo beginning on August 11.
