The Toronto Blue Jays have some favourable trends behind them as they send their ace to the mound on Monday, but that could be offset by bad habits and a key injury. The Blue Jays are -140 away favourites against the +120 underdog Baltimore Orioles with a 9.0-run total on the MLB odds for Monday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Toronto has a 7-2 record in the nine most recent road matchups against Baltimore at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, with the total finishing OVER six times at sports betting sites. However, in terms of recent trends, the Orioles boast a 7-2 record over their last nine games with the total finishing OVER six times, whereas the Blue Jays are 4-6 over their last 10 games, with the total finishing OVER in four of their last five.
Toronto shortstop Bo Bichette, who has a team-leading 1.063 OPS, is going to miss a few weeks due to a sprained right knee. That leaves a hole in a hitting attack that is 25th in on-base percentage (.302) and sixth in slugging percentage (.439). Toronto’s pitching staff ranks seventh with a 3.99 earned-run average, but poor fielding has led to allowing 13 unearned runs already this season, some of which have decided games.
On the Orioles’ side of things, they are eighth in OBP (.331) and second in slugging (.467), but the pitching staff ranks 20th with a 4.62 ERA.
Lefthander Hyun Jin Ryu, Toronto’s No. 1 starter, is slated to start on Monday, while the Orioles are expected to counter with Alex Cobb. Ryu (1-1, 4.05 ERA, 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings) has helped his teams go 9-5 in his last 14 away starts, with the total going UNDER in six of the last eight. He’s allowed only one run in his last 11 innings, but will contend with an opponent with the second-best OPS (.948) against lefties in MLB, thanks to lefty-bashers such as Hanser Alberto and Pedro Severino.
The Blue Jays have not named their starting pitchers for Tuesday and Wednesday’s matchups, while the Orioles are slated to send out a pair of lefties. The Blue Jays’ .720 team OPS against lefties is 19th in MLB.
Nate Pearson (0.0, 5.11 ERA, 8.0 SO/9) has followed Ryu in the rotation, but the rookie right-hander is having control problems to the count of eight bases on balls in his last 7.1 innings. The Orioles will start Wade LeBlanc (1-0, 7.13 ERA, 5.1 SO/9), whose  teams are 3-7 in his 10 most recent home starts, with the OVER hitting nine times.
Tanner Roark (1-1, 6.00 ERA, 7.5 SO/9), based on the Blue Jays’ recent rotation, could start on Wednesday. The Orioles will start lefty Tommy Milone (1-2, 4.00 ERA, 9.0 SO/9). Roark is 0-3 with a 6.88 ERA in four career games against Baltimore, but the total has gone UNDER in his last three starts on the road. Milone has a 2.40 ERA over his last three starts, but his teams are 3-11 in his last 14 starts at home.
The Blue Jays have a busy week. They also host the Philadelphia Phillies in a doubleheader on Thursday before flying south for a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays
