Some indicators suggest the Toronto Blue Jays may break out offensively as they make their first visit to the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Field. The Blue Jays are -154 away favourites and the Rangers are +144 home underdogs with a 9.0-run total for Monday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
The teams did not meet during the shortened 2020 season, but Toronto is 11-9 in its last 20 away games against Texas (regular season only). The Blue Jays are also 9-5 in their last 14 games as an away favourite at online sports betting sites. The Rangers are 10-10 in their last 20 games as a home underdog with the OVER hitting 11 times with three pushes. The total has gone OVER in both 13 of Toronto’s last 20 away games against AL West teams and in nine of Texas’ last 14 home games against AL East teams.
The Blue Jays went 2-1 in their opening series against the powerhouse New York Yankees, scoring 3.0 runs per game with a .206 / .264 / .343 batting slash line. On the other side of the ball, Toronto’s pitching had a 2.33 ERA and 3.88 FIP (fielding-independent pitching). The Rangers went 1-2 against the Kansas City Royals, scoring 7.0 runs per game on .276 / .384 / .410 batting. Their pitching staff had a 9.00 ERA and 6.35 FIP.
Lefthander Steven Matz (0-5, 9.68 ERA, 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings in 2020 with the New York Mets) will make his Blue Jays debut on Monday opposite Rangers righthander Mike Foltynewicz (8-6, 4.54 ERA, 8.1 SO/9 in 2019 with Atlanta, which released him after only one start in ’20). The total has actually gone UNDER in eight of Matz’s last 12 starts on the road. The total went OVER in 11 of Foltynewicz’s last 20 home starts for Atlanta.
Tuesday’s starting pitching matchup features righthanders Tanner Roark (2-3, 6.80 ERA, 7.7 SO/9 in ’20) and Dane Dunning (2-0, 3.97 ERA, 9.3 SO/9 in ’20 with the Chicago White Sox). Roark has a 3.91 ERA in four career starts against Texas, and his teams are 12-8 in his last 20 starts on the road. The Blue Jays will be getting their first live look at Dunning, who allowed just two earned runs across 8.1 innings during spring training play.
Wednesday, Blue Jays lefthander Hyun Jin Ryu and Rangers righthander Kyle Gibson will each make their second start of the season. Ryu has never faced the Rangers, but he has a 2.74 ERA, 3.13 FIP and 9.6 SO/9 since joining Toronto in 2020. The total has gone UNDER in 13 of Ryu’s last 20 starts on the road when his team was favoured. Gibson has a 5.99 ERA, 5.48 FIP and 7.9 SO/9 with Texas, and his teams are 6-11 in his last 17 home starts with the OVER hitting 10 times.
The Blue Jays’ next series is a four-game away set against the Los Angeles Angels that begins on Thursday at Dunedin, Fla., in the team’s temporary home stadium.
