The Toronto Blue Jays have a respectable record as a road underdog, but their playoff opponent seldom falls down on the job when heavily favoured.
In series prices, the Blue Jays are the +185 underdog at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com with the Tampa Bay Rays coming back as a -215 favourite in a best-of-three American League wild card series that begins on Tuesday. In exact series outcome props, the Rays are respectively listed at +160 and +200 for a 2-0 or 2-1 series win. The Blue Jays are on offer at +450 for a sweep and +400 for taking the series 2-1.
Toronto is also a +165 away underdog at betting sites for the series opener while Tampa Bay is a -190 favourite with a 7.5-run total. The Blue Jays are 6-14 in their last 20 games against the Rays as an away underdog, with the total going OVER in five out the seven most recent matchups in that sample. The Blue Jays are 8-10 in their last 18 games as an underdog on the road. However, the Rays are 14-6 in their last 20 games as a home favourite of -170 or deeper into minus money, with the total going OVER on the MLB odds in 11 of the 16 most recent matchups in that sample.
Righthander Matt Shoemaker (0-1, 4.71 ERA, 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings in the regular season) will start on Tuesday opposite Rays lefthander Blake Snell (4-2, 3.24 ERA, 11.3 SO/9). Shoemaker’s teams are 11-7 in his last 18 starts on the road with the OVER hitting 11 times. The Rays are 7-3 in Snell’s last 10 starts against Toronto, and he also has a 2.81 earned-run average in 64 career innings against the Blue Jays.
Lefthander Hyun-Jin Ryu (5-2, 2.69 ERA, 9.7 SO/9) starts opposite righthander Tyler Glasnow (5-1, 4.08 ERA, 14.3 SO/9) in Wednesday’s matchup. The total has gone UNDER in Ryu’s last seven starts on the road in September, and he has a 3.72 ERA in 9.2 career innings against the Rays. The Rays are 8-3 in Glasnow’s last 11 starts at home, with the OVER hitting in five of the last seven. The strikeout artist has a 6.17 ERA in 23.1 career innings against the Blue Jays, who he has yet to face this season.
Should the series go to Game 3 on Thursday, righthander Taijuan Walker (4-3, 2.70 ERA, 8.4 SO/9) is expected to start opposite Rays righty Charlie Morton (2-2, 4.74 ERA, 9.9 SO/9). The total went UNDER in Walker’s last away start on September 20, but he has not had back-to-back UNDER outcomes since 2017. Over the last seven seasons, Morton’s teams have gone 12-3 in his last 15 starts in September, with the OVER hitting nine times. The breaking-ball specialist also has a 3.46 ERA in 41.2 career innings against the Blue Jays.
The series winner will face the New York Yankees-Cleveland Indians series winner in the American League Division Series round.
