The Toronto Blue Jays are favoured at Fenway Park for the first time in over two years as they take on a Boston Red Sox team that is going nowhere fast.
The Blue Jays are -128 away favourites against the +108 underdog Boston Red Sox with a 10.5-run total on the MLB odds for Thursday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. It is the first time since July 18, 2017 – 31 matchups ago – that the Blue Jays have been a road favourite against Boston, according to the OddsShark MLB Database. The Blue Jays are 8-4 in their last 12 away games, while the Red Sox have offered little value as a home underdog, going 5-15 in their last 20 matchups with the OVER hitting 11 times.
Toronto has been tepid offensively away from home, where they score 3.64 runs per game with a .671 on-base-plus-slugging (OPS), which is 23rd in MLB. But the pitching staff’s 3.50 road earned-run average (ERA) is fifth-best. The Red Sox are averaging 4.65 runs in home games and their .783 home OPS ranks a respectable 12th, but that’s been canceled out by a 6.50 home ERA, the worst in MLB outside of Colorado.
Righthander Taijuan Walker (3-2, 3.79 ERA, 7.9 strikeouts per nine innings) will start in Thursday’s matchup opposite Red Sox lefthander Martin Perez (2-4, 4.58 ERA, 6.8 SO/9). Walker threw six shutout innings in his Blue Jays debut on August 29 and the total has gone UNDER in three of his last five starts at online sports betting sites. Walker’s teams are 7-3 in his last 10 starts. Boston is 0-3 in Perez’s home starts this season and the total has gone OVER in 11 of his last 15 starts at home.
Another righty, Tanner Roark (2-1, 5.33 ERA, 7.3 SO/9) is in line to start in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader for the Blue Jays. Although Roark is having issues limiting bases on balls, his teams are 11-7 in his last 18 starts on the road and the total has finished UNDER in four of the last five outings. Neither team has named a starter for Friday’s nightcap, which is a makeup game where Toronto will be designated as the home team. The same goes for the Saturday and Sunday matchups.
Righthander Chase Anderson (0-0, 3.20 ERA, 8.2 SO/9) could take his rotation turn on Saturday for Toronto. His teams are 5-2 in his last seven starts on the road, including a 2-1 Blue Jays win against the Red Sox on August 8.
The two pitchers Toronto added before the August 31 trade deadline, lefthander Robbie Ray (1-4, 7.34 ERA, 12.5 SO/9) and righthander Ross Stripling (3-2, 5.61 ERA, 7.2 SO/9 with the Los Angeles Dodgers), are on the active roster. Ray’s teams are 4-6 in his last 10 starts on the road, with a 4-5-1 over/under split. The Dodgers were 9-2 in Stripling’s last 11 road starts, but the total finished OVER in five of the most recent eight from that sample.
The Blue Jays are at home next week for a pair of three-game series against the New York Yankees (Sept. 7-9) and the New York Mets (Sept. 11-13).
