Disaster Sunday: Blue Jays drop both games of the double-header and lose Bo Bichette to injury

Things worth mentioning…

• After Saturday’s game got suspended due to rain, the game got picked back up in the bottom of the fourth inning with the Blue Jays down 1-0. Despite getting a bunch of guys on base, the Jays couldn’t get many across the plate. They ended up losing 3-2 after Jordan Romano allowed a solo shot to Brandon Lowe, one of baseball’s hottest hitters, in the eighth inning. It was Romano’s first earned run all season.
• The first game was a bit frustrating, but it was ultimately just a tight loss to a good team. It happens. The second game, though? What the fuck? Matt Shoemaker was thrown out of the game for barking at Vic Carapazza for having a shitty strike zone, which put the pitching staff in a difficult situation. Jacob Waguespack, Anthony Kay, and A.J. Cole managed to grind through two innings and a pair of homers from Vlad Jr. (he’s coming around!) and Anthony Alford (his first of the season, which is a nice sight) seemed to have the Jays in the driver’s seat.

• In the top of the seventh inning, which was basically the top of the ninth given the fact they’re shortening double-headers this season, Austin Meadows scored from first base on what should have been a single by Yandy Diaz. With two outs, Diaz smacked a ball to Teoscar Hernandez in right field. Hernandez was, uh, a bit nonchalant with the way he played the ball and Meadows was able to score the game-tying run. In the eighth, Wilmer Font allowed a two-run homer and the Jays got nothing in their half. It would have been Toronto’s first series win of 2020, but, it wasn’t.
• I mean, I’m not going to shit on Hernandez here because he’s been great all season, but man, that was painful. It was the same old, same old Blue Jays shooting themselves in the foot with botched, simple plays that give the other team extra outs or runners or runs. In this situation, it cost the Jays the game-tying run when they were in a position to win the game. The volume of boneheaded stuff we’ve seen from the team, up and down the roster (and I stress again this isn’t just a Hernandez thing, by any stretch) is mind-numbing. I get they’re a young team, but they’ve been playing this sport their whole lives, right? Bleh.
• Anyways, the worst part of Sunday was the news that Bo Bichette has been placed on the 10-day Injured List with a knee sprain. Hopefully he isn’t out for long.
