After watching Game 1 of the Toronto Blue Jays’ three-game series against the San Franciso Giants blow up in the bottom of the ninth, resulting in a walk-off wild pitch, they roared back in Game 2.
It was Ernie Clement who led the charge for the Jays, hitting his second home run in as many days in the top of the fifth inning, hitting a down and out-of-the-zone changeup 385 feet into the stands, giving the Jays a 3-2 lead. It marked the first home run Logan Webb has ever given up on such a pitch, having allowed just 21 hits on 1,177 such pitches in his career so far, as noted by Chris Black, and just the second extra-base hit of his career.
“That’s a testament to the golf we played earlier in the week,” Clement said with a smile after the game.
While the Giants would tie it up in the bottom of the fifth, a six-run top of the sixth would give the Jays a lead they wouldn’t look back on. Now, it sets up Kevin Gausman to take the mound for the Jays in a Thursday afternoon affair opposite a familiar face in Jordan Hicks.
The latter joined the Jays last July in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, throwing 24.0 innings of 2.63 ERA ball for the tea down the stretch run of the season. The Giants have stretched him out into a starter this year, and he’s had much success doing so, despite a 4-5 record on the season. The hard-throwing right-hander has a 3.47 ERA over 18 starts this inning.
The Blue Jays saw Bo Bichette and Daulton Varsho exit Wednesday’s win with injuries and both players are out of the lineup in the rubber match on Thursday afternoon.
