It’s been a season of unexpected breakouts in the Toronto Blue Jays system.
Carter Cunningham hit the ground running to begin the season, Tucker Toman has finally figured it out, Jay Harry has come out of nowhere and is on the cusp of a call-up, and Aaron Parker has quietly been mashing. Another player off to a good start is Nick Goodwin.
On Thursday evening, Goodwin hit a late home run in the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats’ 10-4 loss. The shortstop also hit his 11th double of the season in a three-hit game. Suddenly, the Blue Jays’ seventh-round pick in 2023 is now slashing .257/.364/.497 with 22 extra-base hits. Equally as impressive is his 12.4 BB% and a 16.7 K%.
The thing is, this isn’t Goodwin’s first good season in the system. Last season with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, the 24-year-old slashed .244/.366/.403 with 12 home runs in 385 plate appearances, with a 13.5 K% and 17.8 BB%. That was good for a 118 wRC+. A sticking point of Goodwin in his MLB Pipeline draft profile was his defence, but in 204 innings at shortstop this season, the Kansas State alumni has committed just four errors.
The next step for Goodwin is Triple-A, where he’s already had a cup of tea earlier this season.

Other notes…

Although the Fisher Cats fell 10-4, several other position players had solid offensive games. Hedbert Perez continues to rake, hitting his third home run since joining the Fisher Cats, and his seventh in total. Jorge Burgos hit his fourth home run and 18th double of the season, and Eddie Micheletti Jr. hit his 15th double of the season.
The Triple-A Buffalo Bisons smashed the St. Paul Saints, winning 16-1. Ismael Munguia hit his first home run in Triple-A this season, as did Davis Schneider in the top of the ninth off a position player. Willie MacIver hit two doubles, Eloy Jiménez and Charles McAdoo each hit one.
On the mound, CJ Van Eyk struck out three over five one-run innings, dropping his season ERA to 4.05. Chase Lee struck out two in a clean inning, dropping his ERA to 2.20.
The Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays late comeback attempt fell short, ultimately falling 7-6 to the Jupiter Hammerheads. Blaine Bullard hit his 12th double of the season and stole his 29th bases, while Raimundo De Los Santos hit his third double. Arjun Nimmala played shortstop in a rehab appearance, going 0-2 with a walk and a strikeout, while Juan Sanchez hit a single.
On the mound, Italian lefty Giacomo Taschin struck out five, but issued four walks and allowed two earned runs over his four innings of work. Two-way player Austin Smith walked and struck out two in an inning and a third, and Diego Dominguez struck out two in two innings of work.
Two of the Blue Jays’ rookie league teams were in action on Thursday. The Florida Complex League Blue Jays fell 7-2 to the FCL Phillies, as David Guzman hit his third home run of the season. Jaxson West went 3-3 with three singles, and Enmanuel Bonilla hit a single in his three at-bats.
The Dominican Summer League Blue Jays Blue defeated the DSL Arizona Black by a score of 12-6. All nine of their hits were singles, with shortstop Sebastian Casanova going 3-4. Juan Caricote drove in two with a single.
