One position the Toronto Blue Jays have fortified in their prospect pool these past few years is catchers.
It’s an area that they’ve targeted in many different ways. Before the 2025 trade deadline, they acquired their current backup catcher, Brandon Valenzuela. In the most-recent draft, they selected the consensus top prep catching prospect, Will Brick.
One area where they’ve found success since Ross Atkins/Mark Shapiro took over is in the international free agent market. Who could forget the fantastic 2016 class where they signed Alejandro Kirk and Gabriel Moreno?
Recently, a few of their top IFA signings have been catchers. Some, like Luis Meza, haven’t panned out. Others like Juan Caricote have had a strong start to their professional career. Franklin Rojas, our 31st-best prospect in the 2026 mid-season top Blue Jays prospect update, fits in the latter category. Rojas signed for a bonus a little under $1 million during the 2024 international free agent signing period, the Blue Jays’ top signing that year. Beginning his professional career with the Dominican Summer League Blue Jays, the 5’10” catcher slashed .258/.398/.348 with a home run and a higher walk rate (14.9 BB%) than strikeout rate (14 K%). That gave him a 119 wRC+.
His 2025 season was much of the same, slashing .255/.407/.330 with a home run in 140 plate appearances, with as many walks as strikeouts (15%). His wRC+ dropped a tad to 113 with the DSL Blue Jays in 2025.
Rojas’ first season stateside came this past season with the Florida Complex League Blue Jays. Over 44 games, the 19-year-old slashed .266/.413/.427, but hit a career-high three home runs with 12 doubles and a triple for a 121 wRC+. His K% increased to 21.8%, but Rojas also walked in nearly a fifth of his 179 plate appearances, as his BB% sat at 19%.
Ranking as MLB Pipeline’s 29th-best Blue Jays’ prospect in their mid-season update, Rojas doesn’t have much in the way of projection, standing at 5’10”, 176 lbs. He has a good eye at the plate, but is considered a passive hitter.
Defensively is where he shines, as the Venezuelan’s arm grades out at 55. He’s also an average fielder, while being given a 30 run tool. Rojas profiles as a backup catcher, especially if he can’t do more damage with the bat. That said, his power increase is interesting, as it’s backed up by a solid .167 ISO.
Rojas’ season has wrapped up, but there’s a chance he’ll tandem with Brick for the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays next season.
