Sam Shaw is one of the best Canadian-born prospects in the Toronto Blue Jays’ system.
Production isn’t what the Victoria, British Columbia native lacks since the Blue Jays selected him back in 2023. Unfortunately, Shaw has dealt with a plethora of injuries over the years, which has hampered his development.
Despite the injuries, and currently being on the 7-day injured list, Shaw ranks as our 32nd-best Blue Jays’ prospect in our mid-season top 40 list. If you missed who ranked 33rd, you can read about Ty Southisene here.

Sam Shaw

Position: Outfield
Bats: Left
Born: February 26th, 2005
Acquired: Ninth-round, 2023 MLB draft
Previous ranking: 22nd
The Blue Jays selected the 21-year-old Canadian in the ninth round back in the 2023 MLB Draft. Drafted out of high school, Shaw joined the Florida Complex League Blue Jays to end the season, slashing .207/.425/.276 in 40 plate appearances.
He began his first full professional season with the FCL Blue Jays in 2024, slashing .220/.361/.304 with two home runs in 209 plate appearances, with a higher BB% (16.7%) than K% (10%). Still, Shaw only hit nine extra-base hits, finishing the year with a 96 wRC+. The 2024 season has turned out to be his fully-healthy season.
Shaw joined the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays for the 2025 season, slashing a much-improved .253/.383/.418 with seven oolong-balls in 274 plate appearances, with a 16.4 BB% and 19.7 K%. This performance saw Shaw blast up prospect rankings, even with a rough seven games after a promotion to the High-A Vancouver Canadians.
His 2025 season came to an end in early August 2025, first being placed on the 7-day injured list, before he was placed on the full-season injured list near the end of the season. It turned out that Shaw had a blood clot due to Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, with the Canadian receiving surgery shortly after his placement on the IL.
Shaw was placed on the 60-day injured list before the 2026 season even began, missing the first month and a half. He began a rehab stint with the FCL Blue Jays in mid-May, then the D-Jays in late-May. On June 6th, the Canadians activated the utility player.
In 96 plate appearances with the C’s, Shaw slashed .239/.427/.535 with six home runs and three doubles, with a 25 BB% and 21.9 K%. He also hit a home run on one of his rehab stints, giving him seven for the season. But on July 9th, Shaw was placed on the 7-day injured list once again, and has yet to play since. It’s unclear what the injury is.
When healthy, Shaw has proved to be a productive hitter in the lower-minors, but it’s hard to develop without staying healthy.. Standing at 5’10’, Shaw is a hit-over-power left-handed batter, though he drilled seven home runs in 142 plate appearances this season, matching his total from 2025, which was done in 302 plate appearances.
He has a good eye at the plate and a strong approach. Defensively, Shaw mainly played in centre field when healthy, playing 173.2 of his 217.2 innings at centre. He has below average speed, but solid instincts for the position.
Whether he climbs back up the list is dependant of whether he can return from injury and continue to hit like he did earlier this season. The talent is there, but can he stay healthy?
