Grapefruit Notes: Blue Jays pitchers combine to throw a gem against the Phillies

Blue Jays fans got themselves a treat on Tuesday.
Not only was the game against the Phillies actually on air, the pitchers put together an absolute gem, combining to allow just one earned run on three hits while picking up 13 strikeouts.

Things worth mentioning…

  • Steven Matz, who was making his second outing of spring, got the ball to kick things off. The former Met absolutely mowed the Phillies down over three innings of work, allowing just one hit while striking out three. He’s now thrown five scoreless innings in spring so far.
  • After that, Tyler Chatwood, Francisco Liriano, Rafael Dolis, and David Phelps combined to toss four perfect frames. The Blue Jays were just about perfect until Ryan Borucki came in and allowed a run on a triple and a double. Despite that, two of Borucki’s outs came via the strikeout. Finally, Jordan Romano struck out the side in the ninth inning, working around a hit and a walk.
  • Romano was the only one who really had any command issues as everybody else was mostly pounding the zone. Matz threw 31 strikes on 43 pitches, Chatwood threw nine on 14 pitches, Liriano threw seven on 11 pitches, Dolis threw eight on 12 pitches, and Borucki threw 12 on 16 pitches.
  • An outing like this against a handful Phillies regulars (Rhys Hoskins, Alec Bohm, Odubel Herrera) is certainly a good look for the depth of Toronto’s bullpen. Everybody who pitched today is somebody you’d expect to see on the team during the regular season, so them all pounding the strike zone is nice to see.
