I’m ready for Deck McGuire’s Redemption Tour

You can’t call it a comeback because he never made it in the first place, so it’ll have to be known as Deck McGuire’s Redemption Tour.
Earlier today Marcus Stroman was placed on the 10-day disabled list with some sort of shoulder fatigue or arm shittiness. In his place Joe Biagini and Sam Gaviglio have been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo. We don’t know yet which one of them is going to start in place of Stroman on Sunday, but obviously it’ll be one of them.
While I was going through and looking at how Buffalo’s starters had done so far this season, I couldn’t help but notice Deck McGuire. After a pretty ugly first start to his season, McGuire has been nails. He owns a 2.70 ERA through five starts which is impressive considering he allowed six earned runs in five innings in that first start I mentioned. In McGuire’s last two outings, he’s gone eight innings while allowing just two earned runs total.
Hell yes, Deck. HELL YES.
McGuire, as you’ll probably remember, was drafted by the Blue Jays with the 11th overall pick in the 2009 draft. Two choices after at 13th overall the Chicago White Sox selected Chris Sale. McGuire struggled in Toronto’s system and was ultimately traded to the Oakland Athletics during the 2014 season for cash considerations. Sale rocketed through the system and became an All-Star calibre pitcher just a year after being drafted.
He isn’t currently on the 40-man roster so somebody would have to be removed in order for him to be called up to the Blue Jays, but I think we’re getting to a point where the Deck McGuire Redemption Tour is ready to get rolling. I’m not going to lie, I enjoyed the thought of McGuire being recalled this weekend and going up against Chris Sale because of the Hollywood comeback story potential. It won’t happen this weekend, but hopefully it’s something we’ll see this season.
McGuire has unfinished business in Toronto. I sincerely hope that he gets a chance to pitch with the big club at some point this season because it would be a hell of a story.
