Who doesn’t love high-scoring games?
On Sunday afternoon, the Toronto Blue Jays took on the Tampa Bay Rays, defeating them 13-9 to move their Spring Training record to 9-6-1. Let’s take a look at what happened in the game.
In the top of the first, Davis Schneider hit his double of Spring Training to open the scoring. Daulton Varsho reached on a fielding error, allowing Addison Barger to score in the top of the second to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.
The Rays answered back with a three-run third inning with one swing of the bat from Brandon Lowe to make it a 3-2 game. No runs were scored for a couple of innings before the Blue Jays had a three-run inning of their own, with Steward Berroa hitting a single, Will Wagner hitting a double, and Daulton Varsho hitting a triple to make it 5-3. Over the next two innings, the Rays scored three times to make it a 6-5 game.
And then the Blue Jays had a massive top of the eighth. Outfield prospect Will Robertson hit a two-run home run for the Jays to regain the lead. Shortly after, Jay Harry hit a two-run home run of his own to make it 11-9, before Josh Rivera drove in two on a scoring error.
In the top of the ninth, Damiano Palmegiani hit a massive solo home run that went out of the ballpark to give the Blue Jays a 12-6 lead, followed by a force out RBI from Jonatan Clase to make it a 13-6 game. The Rays scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough.

Takeaways…

Jay Harry was acquired in a trade deadline deal in 2024, as the Blue Jays sent Trevor Richards to the Minnesota Twins for the prospect. He didn’t have a great season after the trade but it’s encouraging he hit a home run in Sunday’s game.
Thanks to 13 home runs, the Blue Jays had a ton of hits. Only Daulton Varsho and Addison Barger had multi-hit games, meaning the 11 other players with a hit were Will Wagner, Michael Stefanic, Harry, Davis Schneider, Orelvis Martínez, Alan Roden, Tyler Heineman, Josh Rivera, Steward Berroa, Will Robertson, and Damiano Palmegiani.
There were also a ton of extra-base hits by the Jays in this game. Harry, Palmegiani, and Robertson went deep, Schneider and Wagner hit a double, while Varsho hit a double and a triple.
The Blue Jays pitching didn’t have the same success. José Berríos started the game and allowed three earned runs in four innings of work. Left-handed reliever Josh Walker gave up two earned runs in an inning and two-thirds, while Zach Pop allowed a run and struck out two in his inning and a third of work. Lazaro Estrada had a rough outing, giving up three earned runs in an inning and two-thirds while Eric Pardinho got the final out.
Next up is a game against the Houston Astros at 1:07 PM ET on Monday. Kevin Gausman is expected to start the game for the Blue Jays.
