Another day, another Blue Jays loss.
On Saturday afternoon, the Blue Jays played the third of four games against the Detroit Tigers, falling 2-1. With the loss, their record moves to 23-28, the worst in the American League East.
The Tigers scored all their runs in the bottom of the first, as Kerry Carpenter hit his second home run of the series, a two-run home run, to give the Tigers the 2-0 lead.
Toronto’s only run came in the top of the seventh, as Davis Schneider hit his 11th double of the season, cashing in Isiah Kiner-Falefa to make it a one-run game. Unfortunately, that’s how this game finished.
Schneider cuts the Tigers lead in half! 👀
Things worth mentioning…
Aside from the two-run homer, José Berríos had a terrific game, finishing with a line of 7 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K to bring his season ERA to 2.94. Although he tagged with the loss, the Blue Jays losing this game was by no means his fault.
Jordan Romano needed some work, so he pitched the bottom of the eight. He struck out two batters while giving up a run, 10 of the 13 pitches he threw were for strikes. This was a good outing, even if it wasn’t a save opportunity.
The Blue Jays had their chances, as they recorded six hits. Isiah Kiner-Falefa had two hits on the day, a single and a double, while Schneider also hit a double. Kevin Kiermaier hit a triple with one out in the top of the third, but he wasn’t cashed in. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandro Kirk had the team’s other two hits.
Justin Turner is spiraling hard after a terrific start to his season. Since April 26, he’s slashing .137/.182/.233 with two homers in 77 plate appearances for an 18 wRC+ coming into this game. It doesn’t help that he went 0-4 with a strikeout on Saturday.
Up next: The Blue Jays will be able to at least draw the series, as they’ll play the final game of the series on Sunday at 11:35 AM ET, ew. Yusei Kikuchi will start the game for the Jays.
