The Toronto Blue Jays might have the law of averages – and the element Bo Bichette has brought to their lineup – on their side as they shift into the role of a fairly heavy home favorite.
The Blue Jays opened as the -150 home favorite (bet $150 to win $100) on the MLB odds while the Seattle Mariners were the +130 away underdog on the early moneyline with a 10-run total for Friday, according to sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Mariners at Blue Jays | OddsShark Matchup Report
The Blue Jays are 4-7 at home this season as a moneyline favorite of -140 or deeper into minus money, although only one of those games – Wednesday’s 7-3 loss to the Texas Rangers – has come since Bichette and his 1.109 OPS arrived only July 29 to provide a jolt from the leadoff spot. The total has gone UNDER in 12 of Toronto’s last 20 home games at online sports betting sites where they were a favorite of -140 to -500 on the moneyline. Meantime, the Mariners are 1-6 in their last seven away games against the AL East.
The total has gone UNDER in four of the Blue Jays’ last six home games, according to the OddsShark MLB Database, and in three of the Mariners’ last five away games.
Rookie right-hander Jacob Waguespack (3-1, 4.31 ERA, 6.8 strikeouts per nine innings) will make his sixth career major-league start in Friday’s opener, while left-hander Wade LeBlanc (6-6, 5.14 ERA, 6.7 SO/9) is in line to start for the Mariners. The total has gone UNDER in four of Waguespack’s last five starts, with an average total of 6.4 runs. The total has gone UNDER in 13 of LeBlanc’s last 20 away starts when his team was the moneyline underdog.
Trent Thornton (4-8, 5.34 ERA, 8.6 SO/9), a fellow rookie right-hander, is the expected starter for the Blue Jays on Saturday, while the Mariners have not named their starter. Toronto is 3-7 in Thornton’s last 10 home starts with the total finishing OVER six times, but it has gone UNDER in his two most recent starts at the Rogers Centre, including a turn on Sunday when he turned in six innings of three-hit, one-run ball against the powerhouse New York Yankees.
The Blue Jays have not announced a starting pitcher for Sunday. The Mariners will start left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (4-8, 5.56 ERA, 6.8 SO/9). The total has gone OVER in 10 of Kikuchi’s last 12 away starts.
Following a travel day on Monday, the Blue Jays are on the west coast for a pair of three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Mariners next week.
