Take two!
According to well, everybody on baseball Twitter, but most notably the official New York Mets account, the Mets have signed old friend Jose Bautista to MLB-minimum deal. I think Anthony DiComo was the one that broke it.
Bautista will make another attempt at sticking in the MLB after his time in Atlanta didn’t go so well. He hit .250/.386/.361 at Triple-A Gwinnett before being called up to the Braves, where he managed a measly .593 OPS in 40 at bats in Atlanta.
This makes sense for the Mets in a way other than “we’ve acquired a name you know that’s well past his prime.” Yoenis Cespedes is currently on the DL with a hip flexor strain and hasn’t begun doing any baseball activities yet, and Juan Lagares is probably out for the season with a toe injury. There’s room for Bautista in that outfield right now – and given his struggles with the Braves – this could very well be his swan song if things don’t pan out.
For those Blue Jays fans eagerly awaiting the return of their hero – and those dumb enough like myself that bought tickets to the Braves series – the New York Mets visit the Rogers Centre on July 2nd. Let’s hope Jose Bautista is on the roster and playing productive baseball.
Godspeed, Joey.
