The Toronto Blue Jays will win a game again at some point, because baseball, but they have to contend with an AL East rival that has treated the Rogers Centre like a second home.
Having lost seven games in a row, the Blue Jays host the Boston Red Sox for a three-game series that begins on Tuesday night. Toronto opened as a +127 underdog (wager $100 to win $127) on the MLB odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com, with Boston set as the early -158 favorite (wager $158 to win $100).
Red Sox at Blue Jays | OddsShark Matchup Report
Toronto is 5-15 in its last 20 home games against Boston and the matchup has become offensively-oriented of late, as eight of the last 10 meetings in Toronto have finished OVER at sports betting sites. However, there is a countervailing trend where nine of the Blue Jays’ last 14 home games against teams with winning records have finished UNDER.
The Blue Jays are 4-6 in their last 10 home games, with the total going UNDER seven times. The Red Sox are 8-2 in their last 10 away games and the total has gone OVER five times, with one push.
Right-hander T.J. Zeuch (0-0, 4.50 ERA, 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings), a September call-up, will be the Blue Jays’ primary pitcher on Tuesday. Zeuch will be working for the first time in a week after allowing three hits and two earned runs over four innings in his MLB debut against the Atlanta Braves on September 3, while striking out four. The Red Sox will counter with righthander Nathan Eovaldi (1-0, 5.77 ERA, 9.1 SO/9). The total has gone OVER in five of Eovaldi’s last seven starts on the road, with one push.
Trent Thornton (4-9, 5.23 ERA, 8.5 SO/9) will start for the Blue Jays on Wednesday opposite fellow righthander Jhoulys Chacin (3-10, 5.60 ERA, 8.2 SO/9). The total has gone OVER in seven of Thornton’s 12 starts this season at home, where his ERA (5.72) is nearly a full run higher than it is on the road (4.87). Chacin, who has never faced the Blue Jays, has had the total finish UNDER in 14 of his last 20 starts on the road, but his teams are 0-9 in his last nine away starts.
On Thursday, Clay Buchholz (1-4, 5.31 ERA, 4.5 SO/9) will start against the Red Sox for the first time since his 10-season tenure in Boston ended in 2016. The Red Sox have not announced their starting pitcher. The total has gone UNDER in 11 of Buchholz’s last 15 starts.
Following this three-game series, the Blue Jays host a three-game set against the New York Yankees.
