After getting a huge split vs New York, the Blue Jays welcomed the Chicago White Sox to town, who are very much not the powerhouse Yankees.

What Happened?

On Monday, the Blue Jays hit three home runs en route to a 4-2 win. Fifth starter Jaime Garcia made his Blue Jays debut and threw six innings, striking out seven and allowing only one run. So much for five and dive, huh? We’re really only going to remember that game for White Sox first base coach Daryl Boston’s whistle and Josh Donaldson’s reaction to it after his home run, though.
On Tuesday, the Blue Jays and Sox went back and forth before Toronto blew the game open with a seven-run 8th inning and won comfortably 14-5. JA Happ was hot and cold, striking out nine over 5.1 but allowing 4 earned runs, but it was all forgotten after the team kicked the door in.
On Wednesday, any idea of a sweep was pretty much gone after Jose Abreu hammered a 3-0 offering from Ryan Tepera 430 feet to dead center field in the 8th to put the Sox ahead for good. This was a game that either side could have won, but in reality, the Sox got a bit unlucky, grounding into three double plays on three balls with exit velocities over 105 MPH. Blue Jays lose 4-3.

Thoughts

  • Josh Donaldson started at third base on both Tuesday and Wednesday, so all the hysteria surrounding his arm health can hopefully be put to rest. He even made a throw to first on a foul ball just for the shits and giggles in the first inning on Tuesday. It doesn’t look like it’s completely back to normal, but it looked pretty good in those two games. At the plate, he looked like his usual self, collecting four hits over the three games, including two dingers.
  • Justin Smoak looks really good. I know we mentioned this in the Yankees series recap, but Smoak hit three doubles over the series. Hell, even his outs are loud.
  • With a healthy Aaron Sanchez this year, we get to see more of that changeup. He’s throwing it much more this season (he threw it 31.6% of the time tonight, compared to 7-9% as a starter in previous years), and man, it’s filthy. This looks like a legitimate weapon that he can use alongside that two seamer and the hammer curve. Of the 31 changeups he threw tonight, 10 of them were whiffed on. Just…look:

Up Next…

The Blue Jays have an off day on Thursday and then go on the road to take on *checks schedule* th- bahahahahahahahahah go look. Seriously. Go.
