The Blue Jays played two games today, keeping a split squad at home to play the Pirates and sending another split squad to Kissimmee to play the Braves. They ended up with a tie and a walk-off wild pitch loss. Spring training, baby! Catch the fever.

Things worth mentioning…

  • The biggest news of the day was Lourdes Gurriel getting drilled on the arm on a pitch from Darren O’Day, who’s probably still wetting his pants over Jose Bautista. Gurriel, who was two-for-two at the plate with a solo homer, left game and has since been diagnosed with a forearm contusion. That’s positive news, of course, as the worst case scenario was a broken bone.
  • Sean Reid-Foley got the start in the game against Atlanta. He went three innings, allowing two runs on a couple of hits and a couple of walks. All the damage came in the third inning, as Reid-Foley walked two batters and allowed a double that drove them both in.
  • After him, Justin Shafer tossed a clean inning with a strikeout, Patrick Murphy allowed a run over two innings, and Jacob Waguespack threw a scoreless inning. Hector Perez had a scoreless eighth, but then allowed the winning run to score in the bottom of the ninth on a wild pitch. Spring, baby! Oh yeah!
  • Back in Dunedin, Aaron Sanchez made his spring debut with with scoreless innings. Apparently he was topping out at 95 mph on the gun. After Sanchez, Clayton Richard came into the game and also tossed two scoreless innings. David Paulino, Joe Biagini, Jave Guerra, Shawn Morimando, and Mark Leiter each threw one inning without giving up an earned run. Pittsburgh’s only run came in the sixth inning on an error by Richard Urena. So, all told, the Jays threw nine innings without allowing an earned run to the Pirates.
  • In the eighth inning of the Pirates game, Logan Warmoth, in his first at bat of spring, smashed a solo bomb off of *checks notes* Eduardo Vera. Large Adult Son content!
