With the 274th overall pick, the Blue Jays have selected Sam Shaw

Remember when the Jays went off the board? Well, that didn’t last long.
With the 274th overall pick, the Jays selected Sam Shaw, a Canadian prep player. He doesn’t rank anywhere on MLB Pipeline’s, Baseball America’s, or Prospects Live’s top draft prospects lists.
However, I did get an opportunity to see him play at the Canadian Futures Showcase that I attended in September 2022. This is what I had to say then:
“Shaw has a compact build with some remaining projectability. He has quick bat speed and ability to hit the ball in all parts of the zone. Shaw is a plus runner with good instincts on the bases. Defensively, he has soft hands and good range.”
On the MLB Pipeline panel, they noted that Shaw has good contact skills, but doesn’t have a lot of impact with the bat. However, ESPN’s Kiley Daniel, who ranked him as his 139th best draft prospect, noted that Shaw is a “Canadian-born masher with unclear defensive home, akin to Edouard Julien”.
Although he impressed me at shortstop at the 2022 Canadian Futures Showcase, I’m not positive if he can play there as he continues to climb the professional ranks. I’m sure he’ll be given every opportunity to play at the premium position though.
We’ll see if he even signs, but if he does, we could be talking about a Top 30 prospect in a few seasons here.
