The Los Angeles Dodgers have not had any tangible drop-off in their recent play, but are now a less prohibitive favorite thanks perhaps to some subtle east coast bias.
The Dodgers are the +280 favorite (wager $100 to win $280) on the 2019 World Series odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com, while the New York Yankees draw in as a +333 second favorite. This is a smaller gap than three weeks ago, when the Dodgers had the top odds at +250 followed by the Yankees at +365.
The biggest factor in the odds narrowing might be that the Yankees have distanced themselves from the Tampa Bay Rays (+2400, up from +1800) and the Boston Red Sox (+2200, also up from +1800) in the AL East division. The shift might make it the time for a Dodgers bettor to act if they are convinced that this Los Angeles team, which boasts both MLB’s home run leader in Cody Bellinger and the second-best team ERA in the entire sport, can win its first Commissioner’s Trophy since 1988.
The price on the AL West powerhouse Houston Astros (+450) is third at online betting sites as they seem headed for a third consecutive division title. The NL East-pacing Atlanta Braves (+750) and AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins (+950) are next on the futures. Interestingly enough, Atlanta and Minnesota are in a three-way tie with Tampa Bay for the best away winning percentage in MLB, suggesting neither should be ruled out simply on the belief that they are unlikely to have home-field advantage in either the ALCS, NLCS or World Series.
The Chicago Cubs (+1300) should probably be faded due to a dismal road record. Dark-horses include the Washington Nationals (+2000), Philadelphia Phillies (+2800), Cleveland Indians (+2200), Milwaukee Brewers (+2800) and Oakland Athletics (+3000). Oakland, with the seventh-best ERA in baseball, could be worth keeping an eye on as it vies for wild-card contention in the competitive AL West.
Since baseball introduced playoffs in 1969, the top regular-season team has gone on to win the World Series 13 of 49 times, or 26.5 per cent. But that percentage is inching up, since it’s happened in five of the last 12 seasons and two of the last three.
