September promotee Anthony Kay will try to maintain a totals trend for the Toronto Blue Jays while making his second major-league start against his hometown team.
The Blue Jays are the +170 home underdog (bet $100 to win $170) while the New York Yankees are the -200 away favourite (bet $200 to win $100) with a 10.5-run total on the MLB odds for Friday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Yankees at Blue Jays | OddsShark Matchup Report
The Blue Jays are 7-8 this season as a home underdog of +150 or more on the moneyline, according to the OddsShark MLB Database, with the total going UNDER in nine of those 15 matchups. The Yankees, on the other hand, have been merciless when they go past the -180 mark in minus money, fashioning a 17-3 record in their last 20 matchups with the OVER hitting 15 times. But the longer-spanning trend has seen the total go UNDER in 13 of the Yankees’ last 17 games against the Blue Jays as away favourites.
Kay (0-0, 3.18 ERA, 12.7 strikeouts per nine innings in one MLB start), a lefthander who was part of the return in the Marcus Stroman trade on July 28, is slated to make his home debut for the Blue Jays on Friday. The native of Stony Brook, New York, will take on a heavily righthanded lineup whose 31-16 record against lefty starters is the second-best in the majors. The Yankees counter with right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (10-8, 4.53 ERA, 7.3 SO/9). The total has gone UNDER in three of Tanaka’s last four away starts.
Rookie right-hander Jacob Waguespack (4-4, 4.55 ERA,  6.8 SO/9) starts Saturday against Yankees lefty James Paxton (13-6, 3.96 ERA, 11.4 SO/9). The total has gone UNDER in seven of Waguespack’s last 10 starts at online sports betting sites. The total has gone OVER in four of Paxton’s last five away starts.
A third rookie, righty T.J. Zeuch (0-0, 5.40 ERA, 5.4 SO/9) will be the Blue Jays’ primary pitcher on Sunday. Zeuch’s low strikeout rate through his first two MLB appearances is in line with his rates in the minor leagues this season as he relies on pitching to contact. The Yankees have not named a starting pitcher.
The Blue Jays have an off-day on Monday, then visit the Baltimore Orioles and the Yankees for three games apiece on their final road trip of the season.
