Toronto has a 10-4 record over its last 14 home games, which have had an average total of 10.4 runs. They are also 6-3 over their last nine home matchups against the Yankees. However, the Yankees are 10-1 in their last 11 games, which have had an average total of 11.1 runs. They are also 4-2 against the Blue Jays this season, outscoring Toronto 50-17 in their last four victories.
Toronto has excellent odds of qualifying for MLB’s expanded playoffs, but its pitching has struggled with 6.55 earned-run average over its last 20 games. The Blue Jays are 6-4 in Shoemaker’s last 10 starts. The Yankees might opt for a bullpen day, with righthander Chad Green (3-2, 3.63 ERA, 12.1 SO/9) possibly serving as the opening hurler. Green has been Blue Jays kryptonite over the years, with a 2.21 ERA in 36.2 innings.
Righthander Tanner Roark (2-2, 6.41 ERA, 8.0 SO/9) is in line to start on Tuesday, likely opposite Yankees righty Gerrit Cole (6-3 ERA, 3.00, 11.9 SO/9). The total has finished at 10.0 runs or higher in four of Roark’s last five starts, and he has a 5.75 ERA in 20.1 career innings against the Yankees. The Yankees are 0-3 in Cole’s last three starts on the road, failing to pay off at online betting sites in that stretch.
The Blue Jays have yet to name a starter for Wednesday and Thursday’s matchups. Righthander Masahiro Tanaka (3-2, 3.27 ERA, 8.0 SO/9) will likely start for the Yankees on Wednesday. Tanaka has a 2.92 ERA in 135.1 career innings against Toronto.
Toronto’s No. 1 starter, lefthander Hyun Jin Ryu (4-2, 3.00 ERA, 10.2 SO/9), has typically received five days’ rest between starts this season. Ryu, who last pitched Saturday, could appear in the series on four days’ rest on Thursday. Over his MLB career, he actually has a 2.82 ERA on four days’ rest, compared to 3.50 with five days.
The Blue Jays conclude the regular season with a three-game home series against the Baltimore Orioles that takes place from Friday to Sunday.
