The Toronto Blue Jays currently employ seven Canadians in the minor league system while three more are currently in the big leagues – Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Zach Pop, and Jordan Romano (currently on the IL) – as per the Canadian Baseball Network.
Per the MiLB transactions page and D.M. Fox on X, one Canuck is on the move to high-A Vancouver in catcher Nicolas Deschamps, a product of Quebec City, Que. Suiting up for Academy Baseball Canada and TNXL Academy before turning professional, Deschamps signed a free-agent deal with the Blue Jays following the 2021 MLB Draft for $20,000.
The right-handed batter has been working his way up the farm system over the past three seasons and has spent the majority of the 2024 campaign in single-A Dunedin outside of a four-game rehab stint in the Florida Complex League early in the campaign.
Blue Jays prospect Nicolas Deschamps promoted to high-A Vancouver
Through 33 contests with the Jays, Deschamps has collected four doubles, three triples, and three home runs to the tune of 17 RBIs across 102 at-bats. He amassed a .235/.342/.422 slash line before the promotion and produced a .764 OPS and a .368 BAbip that now has him moving to the Northwest League across the country.
Very Proud of 2021 TNXL C Nicolas Deschamps on signing with the Toronto Blue Jays. Nic was TNXLs Captain and a leader for all to watch. Was a true joy getting to coach him and now he gets to live his dream! Congrats Nic! @TNXLAcademy @NicolasDescha17 @naaconference pic.twitter.com/QJzznTdumj

Behind the plate, Deschamps has posted a .987 fielding percentage with five passed balls in single-A this year. He also owns a 21% caught-stealing rate and 16 assists to go with improved play behind the plate. The Jays have also used Deschamps at first base sparingly, where he has handled himself to a clean sheet through the limited sample size of 12 innings.
Deschamps joins a catching group in Vancouver that includes Robert Brooks, Jommer Hernandez, Jackson Hornung, and the newly acquired Jacob Sharp, who was part of the return of the Yimi García trade from the Seattle Mariners. The Quebec product joins LHP Connor O’Halloran and OF Dasan Brown as players born North of the border who are currently suiting up for the Canadians.
