What can you even say about Friday’s Toronto Blue Jays’ game?
In game one of their final series of the season, the Blue Jays fell 15-5 to the Miami Marlins, who now have a 60-100 record. It wasn’t a good game, to say the least, as the Blue Jays are now 74-86 for the season.
There’s some good news in this game, as Ernie Clement matched the career-high in home runs he set last season with his 12th homer of the season. Of course, only one of those home runs were in the big leagues, but Clement’s power surge is encouraging.
Alejandro Kirk extended his hitting streak to 18 games as he had a two-hit performance, both singles. For the season, Kirk is now slashing .255/.319/.362 with five home runs in 382 plate appearances for a 95 wRC+. Hopefully, he can continue this stretch into next season.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had two hits in this game, both singles, and now he’s just one hit shy of reaching 200 hits in a season for the first time in his career. This season, the 25-year-old first baseman is slashing .326/.398/.549 with 30 home runs. Pay him.

Kirk and Guerrero Jr. weren’t the only two Blue Jays’ hitters with a multi-hit game, as Leo Jiménez and Natha Lukes each had two hits, with the latter hitting his fourth double of the season. Moreover, Spencer Horwitz and George Springer hit singles, giving the Blue Jays 12 hits in this game.
Once again, it was pitching that let the Blue Jays down. It was a sad way to end the season for José Berríos, as he gave up six earned runs and three walks in three innings pitched. Easton Lucas gave up four earned runs in three innings pitched, while Brett de Geus gave up four earned runs in an inning of work.
Ryan Burr only allowed one run, a solo home run to make it 15-5. The only Blue Jays’ pitcher that didn’t give up a run was Tyler Heineman, who allowed a hit in his inning of work. Yes, Tyler Heineman the catcher.
Of course, there’s some good news as well. The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the New York Yankees 4-2, bringing their season record to 75-85. Moreover, the Rangers are playing a three-game series against the abysmal Los Angeles Angels, meaning the Blue Jays are in a great position to finish with 7.48% odds to move to the first-overall pick.
There are just two games remaining this season. First up is Saturday’s game which starts at 3:07 PM ET with Yariel Rodríguez expected to start for the Jays. Sunday has the same start time, but it’ll likely be a bullpen day for the Jays.
