Blue Jays prospect Eric Pardinho has been away from the team for the past week and has been down in Tucson, Arizona for World Baseball Classic qualifiers. The right-hander is pitching for Brazil, with the country looking to book one of the last remaining spots for next year’s WBC tournament.
After going 2-1 in the tournament, losing only to Colombia (who also advanced with their 3-0 record), Brazil faced Germany in a ‘do-or-die’ game yesterday. The two teams had faced off earlier in the tournament and Brazil got the upper hand by a score of 9-7.
Germany got off to an early lead in the first inning thanks to a Simon Baumgardt single to score a run but Brazil answered right away, plating two of their own runs to take a 2-1 lead. Germany responded with another run in the third inning to tie the game but Brazil once again answered with a three-spot of their own. Another run in the fourth put six runs on the day for Brazil and that would be enough, with Pardinho and his teammates securing their spot in the tournament next year by a score of 6-4.
The Blue Jays pitcher appeared in one game in the tournament, a relief appearence during their first contest against Germany, with the 24-year-old securing the save while going two innings. Pardinho allowed zero hits but surrendered four walks and one earned run in his outing compared to two strikeouts. The Luceila, Brazil native was sitting in the low 90s with his fastball and sinker while also mixing in his cutter and changeup.
Also on the team was Bo Bichette’s brother Dante, who is eligible for the tournament due to their mother hailing from Porto Alegre, Brazil. While both brothers were on the team for the 2017 World Baseball Classic qualifer, only Dante suited up this time around and the older brother posted a .267/.353/.333 slash line with four hits, two RBIs and two walks through 15 at-bats.
With the qualifers over, Brazil will join Colombia, Chinese Taipei, and Nicaragua at next year’s tournament, with their respective pools still to be determined. Canada will play their games in San Juan, PR and feature in Pool A with Puerto Rico, Cuba, Panama, and one of the teams from the qualifer rounds.
