Ernie Clement hasn’t been one of the best bats on the Blue Jays this postseason; he’s been one of the best bats in Jays postseason history.
Entering last night’s game against the Dodgers, Clement was running with an 11-game hit streak, one that started back on October 13th, the second game of the ALCS against the Seattle Mariners. While he struck out in his first at-bat against Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the New York product bounced back in the bottom of the fifth inning by lacing an inside fastball from the Japanese starter through the left side of the infield for a single.
This extended his hitting streak to 12 games, tying Pat Borders and his postseason hit streak dating back to 1992 (when the Jays won their first World Series). Clement would chip in with a double before the night was over in the eventual 3-1 loss.
Clement has been on fire this postseason, authoring a .397/.403/.544 slash line with five doubles, one triple, one home run and nine RBIs to the tune of a .947 OPS. Splitting his time between third and second base, Clement has been an instrumental figure for the Blue Jays this postseason, the first time he has played October baseball in his career.
Had he not gone 0 for 3 at the plate on October 12th in the opening game against the Mariners, Clement’s hit streak would be at 16, as he has collected a hit in every other game except for the October 4th contest against the New York Yankees, the first game of the ALDS. He was dominant against the Bronx Bombers as well, going 9 for 14 (.643) with one double and one home run. With last night’s game, the Blue Jays’ utility player now has nine multi-hit games this postseason.
Clement will have an opportunity tonight to take the overall franchise hit streak postseason record when the Blue Jays face off against the Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series.
