The Toronto Blue Jays are looking to build some momentum after a tough six game stretch. The Jays dropped three games against the Chicago White Sox on the road before facing the Dodgers at home, winning the finale to salvage the series in the 2025 World Series rematch.
The Jays are battling a boatload of injuries – numerous starters are on the IL in Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, Jose Berrios, and Cody Ponce – as well as a flu bug that is going around that has hampered the club right from the get-go. Max Scherzer left his most recent start with forearm tenditinis, although the Jays are confident he will be good to go for his next start.
With all of these injuries to the rotation, the Jays signed southpaw Patrick Corbin to a $1 million deal earlier this month and the veteran starter will be making his first start with the Jays tonight against the Minnesota Twins. Corbin was ready when the Jays signed him and after one outing in Single-A Dunedin (5 IP / 4 H / 0 ER / 1 BB / 9 K), they are calling on him to start for the Jays.
Opposite of Corbin this evening will be a familiar face in Simeon Woods-Richardson, who was one of the prospects traded to the Twins as part of the Jose Berrios deal years ago.
SWR has been carving out a role in the Twins rotation over the years and the right-hander is off to a solid start to begin the 2026 season. The right-hander has made two starts and through 11 2/3 innings, he has allowed 10 hits, three earned runs, and three walks while striking out six to the tune of a 5.12 FIP and a 1.114 WHIP. Opponents own a .233/.283/.395 slash line on Woods-Richardson and he’s allowed two home runs so far this season.
Also in the Twins lineup will be Austin Martin, who was traded alongisde Woods-Richardson in the Berrios deal.
For the Blue Jays, Daulton Varsho slots into the two-hole with a right-hander on the mound and Jesus Sanchez will play right field and bat in the clean up spot. Davis Schneider finds himself in the lineup after a strong Wednesday performance off the bench and Brandon Valenzuela will catch Corbin tonight.
