The Toronto Blue Jays giveth and the taketh away.
After sweeping the Washington Nationals in their second series of the season, the Blue Jays followed it up by getting swept by the New York Mets as their bats went cold. Well, even colder than they’ve been all season.
As you know, superstar first baseman signed a 14-year, $500 million deal, the second-largest contract in baseball history in present-day value. Well, the start to his season hasn’t been great, as he has yet to hit a home run. The same is the case for the other two batters in the top third of the lineup, Bo Bichette and Anthony Santander.
In fact, the Blue Jays are tied for the fewest home runs in the league with just five, three from Andrés Giménez, one from backup catcher Tyler Heineman, and the other one from George Springer. The latter is back in the lineup after taking a rough fall on Saturday against the Mets. Hopefully, the dimensions of Fenway Park can help get their bats going.
As it’s the 11th game of the season, we’re now starting the third turn around the rotation, with José Berríos getting the start. His Opening Day start wasn’t great, but the starting pitching since that day has been good. The Jays need that to continue with Monday’s start.
Let’s set up the series opening against the Boston Red Sox.
