The Toronto Blue Jays entered Yankee Stadium last night and emerged victorious thanks to Kevin Gausman and the bats coming to life early. The right-hander twirled an eight-inning gem before Braydon Fisher closed the door in the bottom of the ninth inning. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. belted a home run and went 4 for 5 on the day, while Bo Bichette followed suit with a 3-5 day with two RBIs as well.
Looking to keep the momentum going this afternoon will be right-hander Chris Bassitt, who will be making his 30th start of the season.
The veteran hurler owns a 4.10 ERA on the season with a 1.327 WHIP, with hitters authoring a 9.3 H/9 on the Jays starter this season. He’s also seen an uptick in the home runs (1.3 HR/9), the same number he posted in his first campaign with Toronto, but he’s seen a positive bump in his strikeout numbers (8.9 K/9) while walking hitters at a tidy 2.7 BB/9 clip. Opposing bats own a .751 OPS and a .325 OBP mark on Bassitt this year.
Through his last six starts, Bassitt has not allowed more than three earned runs in a game and owns a 3.55 ERA and a 4.35 FIP through 33 innings. The bullpen and the bats have struggled to support him, with the Jays losing five of those outings, but he’s allowed just 13 earned runs through that span.
Taking the mound today for the Yankees is 2024 Rookie of the Year Luis Gil, who is making his seventh start of the campaign after starting the season on the IL.
Gil owns a 3.68 ERA and a 3.99 FIP through 29 1/3 innings, striking out 29 batters compared to 19 walks. The Dominican product has been wild this season (more than normal), posting a 5.8 BB/9, which has seen his WHIP climb to 1.602 this year despite the stronger ERA and FIP. Gil has also seen a sharp increase in his H/9 (8.6) and opposing bats own a .325 BABIP, .774 OPS, and a .257 average on the right-hander.
Lineup-wise, Tyler Heineman will work behind the plate with Bassitt on the mound (and Kirk playing last night). Seven of the eight remaining players return to the lineup this afternoon, with the only change being Isiah Kiner-Falefa being at third base while Ernie Clement gets a day off.
The Yankees have Aaron Judge back in the DH spot after his stint in right field last night, with Giancarlo Stanton getting a day off. Austin Wells will be behind the plate. Ben Rice will shift over to first base, with Paul Goldschmidt getting the day off as well. Anthony Volpe will be at shortstop, taking over for Jose Caballero.
