Blue Jays GDB 18.0: Toronto looks to turn the tide against one of the hottest pitchers to start the season

The Toronto Blue Jays returned from their road trip and were properly humbled by the Atlanta Braves yesterday, with Easton Lucas allowing eight earned runs and three homers en route to an 8-4 beatdown. The Jays attempted a late inning comeback, plating three runs in the eighth and ninth innings combined, but it fell short of the mark.
It was the first time Jays fans have seen Easton Lucas be somewhat human after an impressive start to the season, and the Braves bats awoke the first day on Canadian soil. Today, organizations around the league will be celebrating Jackie Robinson Day, so all players will don #42 today.
With this in mind, the Blue Jays turn to veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman to try and right the ship, with the Jays losing three of their last four games. Gausman has been stellar through his three starts this season, allowing just nine hits through 19 1/3 innings with just five earned runs allowed. His command is sharp, with just three free passes, although his strikeouts are noticeably down to begin the year (6.5 K/9). He will face a more depleted Braves roster that is playing without Ronald Acuna Jr., Jurickson Profar, and Marcel Ozuna.
Opposite of Gausman is an even more impressive arm to start the campaign in Spencer Scwhellenbach.
The right-hander has been lights out from the get-go, posting a minisucle 0.45 ERA through 20 innings of work. He’s allowed just 10 hits and one earned run compared to three walks and 19 strikeouts. Schwellenbach’s ERA leads the Major Leagues, and his 2.38 FIP is a testament to his work on the mound so far.
Toronto will be without Nathan Lukes today, as he lands on the paternity list. In a corresponding move, Addison Barger has been recalled and will start in right field to get his left-handed bat in the lineup.
