The Toronto Blue Jays can never do it the easy way.
Heading into the top of the ninth inning on Friday night’s contest, Toronto trailed 2-1 and needed the bats to find a way to save off another loss, a tough task for the team at this time. Yankees closer Devin Williams unravelled and the Jays pounced at the opportunity, plating three runs on the back of an Alejandro Kirk two-RBI double, with his runner later scoring as well. Jeff Hoffman was lights out in the ninth, and the Jays improved to a 13-13 record on the year.
Today, the Blue Jays will be sending right-hander Kevin Gausman to the mound while the Jays will be tasked with facing left-hander Max Fried, a free agent this past winter that the Jays were kicking the tires on before he landed with the Bronx Bombers. This is the first game of a doubleheader, with the second contest slated for this evening after yesterday’s game was moved due to inclement weather. Jonatan Clase will be the 27th man for today and slots into the first game.
Gausman owns a 3.16 ERA through five starts, striking out 26 batters through 31 1/3 innings of work. He was tagged for four runs in his last start against Houston earlier this week, the most he has allowed all season, and will be looking to bounce back with a solid outing in New York. For his career, Gausman owns a 3.70 ERA through 18 appearances (15 starts) at Yankee Stadium, striking out 83 batters through 87 2/3 innings while boasting a 6-5 record.
The Jays will be facing Max Fried, who is off to a strong start for his new club. The former Braves hurler owns a 2.90 FIP and a 1.42 ERA through five outings and 31 2/3 innings, striking out 30 compared to seven walks. He has allowed just nine runs all year long, and in each game he has started this year, the Yankees have won so far. He has gone seven-plus innings with zero earned runs allowed on two occasions so far this year and has a strong history of playing the Jays, holding them to a 0.95 ERA through 19 innings, allowing just 11 hits and two earned runs in the process.
