The Toronto Blue Jays started their series against the Chicago White Sox off on the wrong foot, with the club dropping the opening contest by a score of 7-1. Spencer Turnbull struggled through two innings of work and southpaw Mason Fluharty was tagged for three runs as well, with the Jays needing seven pitchers to get through the outing.
Today, they will be looking to bounce back and will have right-hander Jose Berrios leading the charge.
Berrios owns a 3.81 ERA through 15 starts this season and has limited opposing bats to a .246 average on the year. He’s struck out 76 batters through 87 1/3 innings of work, and lately, he’s been pitching on the right track. Through three outings in June, he’s allowed just seven earned runs through 17 1/3 innings of work while walking five batters. He’s almost limited the home runs to just two knocks against, which has been a problem for him in the past.
The Jays will need him to go deep in today’s game, especially since Chad Green, Nick Sandlin, Braydon Fisher, Brendon Little, and Fluharty all surpassed 15+ pitches last night.
Opposite Berrios on the mound will be a familiar foe in Aaron Civale. Civale was acquired by the Chicago White Sox earlier this month, and this will be his second start under the new banner.
This will be Civale’s seventh start of the year after the right-hander started the year on the IL with a hamstring issue after making just one start for the Brewers. Through his limited action, Civale owns a 4.67 ERA, but most of that came from his opening contest back on March 30th against the Yankees, where he allowed five runs. Since his return, Civale has not allowed more than two earned runs in a start while going at least four innings in each affair.
Lineup-wise, the Blue Jays will be without Addison Barger, who is considered day to day with right hip discomfort. Nathan Lukes will now take over in right field and slot into the second spot in the batting order.
