The Toronto Blue Jays were looking to build upon the lows of the 2019 season and turned to the ‘Mayor of Ding Dong City’ to get the job done.
On December 30th, 2019, the Jays signed infielder Travis Shaw to a one-year deal worth $4 million. Shaw had previously spent the past five seasons split between the Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers, and was non-tendered by the Brew Crew during the 2019/2020 offseason before signing with Toronto.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic condensing the season, fans didn’t get to see much of Shaw in a Jays uniform. He would be the Jays’ Opening Day third baseman that season.
Across his lone campaign with Toronto, which was spent entirely south of the border due to the pandemic, Shaw crafted a .239/.306/.411 slash line with six home runs, 17 RBIs, and 10 doubles to the tune of a .717 OPS. With the Jays, Shaw belted his 100th career home run against the Miami Marlins on August 12th, taking reliever Nick Vincent’s offering deep over the left field wall for a two-run shot.
During the Jays’ brief AL Wild Card run, Shaw collected one hit in four at-bats.
Defensively, Shaw split his time between the corner infield spots, spending more time at third base (275 1/3 innings) compared to first (72 innings). He would post a .977 fielding percentage at the hot corner, making two errors.
That following winter, the Jays would non-tender Shaw, and he would enter free agency again. He would finish his career by returning to the Brewers and later the Red Sox, returning to his two previous teams, but made just 269 plate appearances at the big league level across the following two seasons.
Shaw would retire during the 2022/2023 offseason.
