Joey Loperfido is being evaluated for a head/neck injury after slamming into the Green Monster at Fenway Park while making a catch up against the wall to conclude the seventh inning on Thursday.
The 25-year-old was forced to leave the contest versus the Boston Red Sox and was replaced by Davis Schneider in the eighth. Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters post-game that the left-handed-hitting outfielder is undergoing testing to rule out any potential ailment(s).
Loperdfido appeared to be favouring the back of his head after recording the final out of the inning on a flyout from Triston Casas.
Toronto went on to win Thursday’s series finale via a 2-0 shutout over Boston, taking three of the five games played at Fenway Park — one of those included the suspended contest from June 26, which was resumed during an unofficial double-header on Monday.
The Blue Jays acquired Loperfido in a blockbuster trade involving left-handed starter and pending free agent Yusei Kikuchi last month, receiving the rookie outfielder along with infielder Will Wagner and right-hander Jake Bloss in a package from the Houston Astros.
It was a rough hitting display out of the gate, as Loperfido went 6-for-43 (.140) with 19 strikeouts and only one walk over his first 12 games following the trade. Recently, however, he has turned a corner at the plate, recording seven extra-base hits — including a pair of home runs — while slashing .282/.317/.615 over his previous 11 contests.
Overall, he owns four home runs, 21 RBIs, a trio of stolen bases and a .223/.276/.372 slash line in 62 games split between Houston and Toronto during his rookie campaign this season. In the field, he’s logged 463.2 combined innings at all three outfield positions and first base, registering five defensive runs saved.
