After struggling in his third rehab outing, Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider announced that veteran right-hander José Berríos would make one more start in Buffalo with the Bisons on Sunday, before rejoining the Blue Jays’ rotation.
In Berríos’ third rehab start, the 31-year-old posted a line of 4.0, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, allowing home runs to Spencer Jones and Seth Brown. Berríos’ velocity was noticeably down, averaging 91.9 MPH on his four-seamer, and 90.6 MPH, as the temperatures hovered around 13 degrees Celsius in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Berríos finished at 70 pitches, 15 up from the 55 he threw in his second outing in Single-A with Dunedin. The fourth start will allow Berríos to build up his pitch count before returning to the big league roster.
In three starts, Berríos has recorded an ERA of 8.44 and a WHIP of 1.50, allowing opposing batters to hit .295 against him. The 10-year MLB veteran is coming off a season where he made 31 appearances (30 starts), posting a record of 9-5 with a 4.17 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP over 166 innings.
After mulling over giving rookie Trey Yesavage an extra day of rest, the Blue Jays announced that the 22-year-old would make his scheduled start on Sunday against the Minnesota Twins. Yesavage made his 2026 season debut on Tuesday night in a 3-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox, going 5 ⅓ shutout innings, allowing only free hits, and striking out three batters.
With Berríos receiving an extra start with the Bisons, that leaves Monday’s starter in the series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays in question. Left-hander Eric Lauer remains the likely option after starting Wednesday against the Red Sox. In six games this season (five starts), Lauer is 1-3 with a 6.00 ERA and 1.52 WHIP.
