The Toronto Blue Jays are planning to run it back following their magical 2025 season, keeping largely the same roster intact and front office group heading into next season.
On Thursday, president and CEO Mark Shapiro addressed the media during the club’s end-of-season press conference at Rogers Centre, discussing several topics, including his expiring contract status.
Shapiro entered this season in the final year of a five-year extension, which is believed to expire in January 2026, presenting the option for his potential departure if the ’25 campaign went poorly. But, amidst the franchise’s improbable run to the World Series, both sides expressed mutual interest in extending his tenure, albeit pausing those negotiations until the post-season concluded.
Now that the off-season has arrived, it likely won’t be long before the organization’s POBO is reupped on a multi-year extension, with him admitting, “We’ll likely work something out soon.”
Shapiro joined the Blue Jays organization midway through the 2015 season, replacing former team president and chief executive officer Paul Beeston, who had previously served in that role since 1991 and had been an employee since the franchise’s inception in ’76 — one year ahead of its inaugural campaign.
Under the Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins era, which began in 2016, Toronto has made the playoffs five different times, but remained in search of its first post-season victory — game or series — prior to this fall. This past season was very much an inflection point for this front-office executive duo, given the October woes that also resulted in the franchise failing to qualify entirely in ’24.
Much of the spotlight was also on Atkins, whose contract will expire after next season. When asked about his status, the Blue Jays’ GM declined to speak on his future with the franchise.
But assuming an extension is around the corner for Shapiro, chances are one will soon be on its way for Atkins, too.
