Max Scherzer’s goal of returning to the Toronto Blue Jays’ rotation is set to take a big step on Friday.
Per Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi, Scherzer will travel with the Blue Jays when they head out on their upcoming nine-game road trip. While the Blue Jays will head to Seattle to begin their series with the Mariners on Friday, Scherzer will head north and make a rehab outing in High-A with the Vancouver Canadians.
Scherzer was placed on the injured list for the second time this season on June 17, hours before he was scheduled to pitch against the Boston Red Sox. Scherzer originally returned from his first stint on the IL on June 10 after missing over a month due to right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation.
The first start was a rough outing for Scherzer as the 41-year-old was hit hard by the Philadelphia Phillies, turning in a pitching line of 3.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, and allowing two home runs in the 7-4 loss. The lone bright spot from that outing was that Scherzer was able to record his 3500th career strikeout, with the total now sitting at 3503, the second most among all active MLB pitchers.
After being re-signed to a one-year, $3 million contract in March, Scherzer has struggled with health and results in 2026. Through six starts, Scherzer is 1-4 with a 10.23 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and has really struggled with the long ball, highlighted by his nine home runs allowed across his 22 innings pitched.
Following his outing with the Canadians, Scherzer will rejoin the Blue Jays in Seattle, where he will throw his regular side session on Sunday before determining the next steps in his rehab. With Patrick Corbin’s shift to the bullpen, the Blue Jays are currently working with four starters, leaving the door open for Scherzer to return to the rotation if he can prove that he still has some gas left in the tank.
