It’s not looking good midway through the minor league week.
We’re at the halfway mark of the week, which means it’s time for another Minor League Report focusing on how the four “A” affiliates did on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
Let’s dig in!
Bisons lost the first two games of the series
Rain, rain, go away. Once again, the Buffalo Bisons had a game rained out and postponed later in the week, meaning they have played just two games so far this week. Tuesday’s game wasn’t great, as the Bisons fell 10-2 in six innings to the Syracuse Mets. Will Robertson hit a double and a home run, with Jonatan Clase, Michael Stefanic, Riley Tirotta, Ali Sánchez, and Steward Berroa each hitting a single. Jake Bloss had another tough start. There were far fewer runs scored in Thursday’s game, as the Bisons were held off the scoreboard in a 2-0 defeat. In fact, they only totalled three hits the entire game, as Michael Stefanic hit three singles. No one else had a hit. Lazaro Estrada made the start, pitching three and one-third innings with two earned runs allowed. The bullpen had a solid day, though.
The Bisons play twice on Friday and have two more games over the weekend.
Fisher Cats lose two of three
The New Hampshire Fisher Cats are at home hosting the Harrisburg Senators. It hasn’t been a great start for the Jays’ Double-A affiliate team, as they fell 5-3 in Tuesday’s game. Jace Bohrofen hit his first Double-A home run, while RJ Schreck and Eddinson Paulino hit doubles, but the Fisher Cats mustered just seven total hits, two of which came from Paulino. It spoiled a great Ryan Watson start, as he pitched six innings with only one earned run given up.
Wednesday was a high-scoring affair, as the Fisher Cats defeated the Senators 10-9. Bohrofen hit another home run, while Peyton Williams (nicknamed the Iowa Meat Truck) hit his second Double-A home run in walk-off fashion. Alex De Jesus, Josh Rivera, and Devonte Brown each hit a double. Anders Tolhurst made the start, giving up five runs, four earned, in five innings of work. Reliever Conor Larkin struck out two in an inning and a third.
Thursday saw a blowout, as the Fisher Cats lost that one 11-4 to move to 4-5 on the season. Williams had the only extra-base hit, a double, as well as a multi-hit game. Devereaux Harrison had a tough start, giving up four earned runs in three and two-thirds innings, while Alex Amalfi gave up four earned runs (five total) in an inning and two-thirds. Michael Dominguez had a good outing, striking out two in an inning of work.
Canadians lost home opener, won their last two
The only “A” affiliate team in the Jays organization to have a series lead heading into the middle of the week is the Vancouver Canadians. They actually lost their opening game 11-8 on Tuesday. Arjun Nimmala, Victor Arias, and Carter Cunningham hit a double, while Jay Harry hit a triple. Arias had a three-hit game. Fernando Pérez started that game, giving up three earned runs in three innings of work. The only pitcher with a scoreless outing was Kai Peterson, who struck out three and walked two in an inning and a third.
Wednesday’s game had far fewer runs scored, as the Canadians took it 5-2. The lone home run for the Canadians came from Aaron Parker, his first High-A home run. Arias had two hits, and Sean Keys walked four times. Grant Rogers had another strong start, pitching five innings with one unearned run given up while striking out six. Irv Carter had a much better outing, giving up one earned run in three innings of work.
The high-scoring continued on Thursday, though, as the Canadians defeated the Eugene Emeralds 13-5. Cutter Coffey hit the team’s only home run, while Arias and Cunningham hit doubles. Nick Goodwin walked three times while Arias, Coffey, and Harry had multi-hit games. Starting the game for the Canadians was Jackson Wentworth, who struck out eight in four and one-third innings pitched, giving up two earned runs in the process. Nate Garkow struck out six in his 2.2 innings pitched.
D-Jays won in a blowout, lost the other two
Like the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays lost two and won one. Tuesday’s game was a 4-2 loss, as they mustered just four hits. Braden Barry hit his third double of the season, while Brock Tibbitts hit his first home run of the season. Colby Holcombe made the start, striking out seven and allowing two earned runs in his five innings of work.
Game two of the series was far less close, as the D-Jays smacked the Flying Tigers 18-2. Their home runs came from Bryce Arnold, Edward Duran, and Yeuni Munoz, while Munoz, Manuel Beltre, and Alexis Herrnandez hit doubles, and Tibbitts hit a triple. Khal Stephen had another strong start, striking out five in his five innings of scoreless work.
The D-Jays were back in the loss column on Thursday, though. They fell 6-4, with Munoz hitting his second home run in as many games. Hernandez and Arnold hit doubles. Daniel Guerra gave up three earned runs, three walks, and struck out three in three and two-thirds innings pitched. Gilberto Batista pitched another scoreless outing, striking out three in four innings of work.
On Friday, the D-Jays will look to even the series as Austin Cates has the start.
