There’s only one catcher on this year’s top 40 prospect list
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual Pre-Season Prospect Countdown, this time looking at the top 40 prospects in the organization. We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and other publications’ scouting reports if available.
Let’s take a look at our 40th-best prospect, Randy Soto.
Getting to know Randy Soto…
Position: Catcher/first base
Bats: Switch
Born: November 16, 2006
Acquired: 2024 International Free Agency
Previous ranking: 32
Soto was the top performer in the Dominican Summer League for the DSL Blue Jays last season. While he’s yet to hit his first professional home run, the catcher slashed .269/.485/.351 with 11 doubles, on top of a higher BB% (22.7%) than K% (13.4%), which is always a good sign for a young player. Of all qualified hitters in the system, his 149 wRC+ in 194 plate appearances ranked the best.
Last season, Soto split time between first base and catcher. At catcher, he committed four errors in 23 games, 19 of which he started. Moreover, Soto threw out 26.67% of batters, not a bad number by any means. The 18-year-old also gave up six passed balls, so blocking is an area he’ll need to improve. At first base, Soto committed three errors in 172 innings or 23 games.
Standing at 5’10”, 160 lbs, there’s still a little bit of projection in his frame although not a lot. Soto’s hit tool is his best, but he’ll also need his power to develop a little bit more over the coming seasons. It’s also important he sticks at catcher as the Jays don’t have a whole lot of exciting catching prospects in their ranks and catchers are far more valuable than first basemen.
Next season, Soto will likely start with the team’s Florida Complex League team, his first test stateside. Depending on how he does, he could get a significant boost in the mid-season ranking, especially if the power develops.
