The Florida Complex League Blue Jays didn’t have a good season but Kendry Chirinos did.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual Pre-Season Prospect Countdown, this time looking at the top 40 prospects in the organization. We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and other publications’ scouting reports if available.
Let’s take a look at our 38th-ranked prospect, third baseman Kendry Chirinos!
Getting to know Kendry Chirinos…
Position: Third base
Bats: Right
Born: October 6, 2004
Acquired: 2022 International Free Agency
Previous ranking: Not ranked
Chirinos signed in the 2022 International Free Agency period and made his debut the following summer, slashing .180/.373/.278 with a home run in 177 plate appearances in the Dominican Summer League for an 87 wRC+. Most of his 2023 season was spent in the Florida Complex League, where he slashed .198/.435/.260 with two home runs in 138 plate appearances, with an additional 15 plate appearances in Single-A.
Like the previous season, the third baseman spent his season in the FCL but had a much better one. He slashed .300/.402/.443 with two home runs in 164 plate appearances, with a 9.8 BB% and a 25 K% for a 134 wRC+. Of all qualified batters in the Toronto Blue Jays system, his wRC+ ranked fifth behind Peyton Williams, Alan Roden, Victor Arias, and Randy Soto. For any batters with 150 or more plate appearances, his 134 wRC+ ranked seventh, with the same four players above him plus Spencer Horwitz and Je’Von Ward.
The next step for the 20-year-old third baseman is Single-A. Standing at 5’11”, 170 lbs, you have to question how much more power he can squeeze out, as he doesn’t have much projection remaining in his frame. Moreover, it’s expected that Chirinos will stick at third base as he has a strong arm. If he can hit for an average like he did last season, Chirinos will climb up the ranks, especially if his power improves as well.
