The Blue Jays bullpen is in disarray.
On Friday, the team traded Yimi García to the Seattle Mariners. Two days later, they traded Nate Pearson to the Chicago Cubs.
Prior to Saturday’s game, the Blue Jays recalled Ryan Burr to replace Pearson, while placing Canadian closer Jordan Romano on the 60-day Injured List.
Romano was among the league’s best closers the past few seasons, but has struggled with injuries and poor play in 2024. He started the season on the 15-day Injured List with an elbow injury, and once he returned, he posted a 6.59 ERA and a 6.14 FIP in 13.2 innings pitched, far from his norm the past four seasons.
Unfortunately, Romano was placed on the 15-day Injured List on June 1 due to the right elbow flaring up again, and received surgery on the elbow the following month. Thankfully, it wasn’t Tommy John surgery, but Romano is set to miss six weeks dating back to July 3.
Another unfortunate aspect to this is that Romano was considered a trade candidate for contenders, and with a season and a half remaining on his contract and a great track record, he’d likely land the Blue Jays a solid haul. That plan is out of the question now, though.
As for Burr, the Blue Jays acquired the right-handed pitcher at the end of May and he’s had some success with the Jays. This season, he has a 5.40 ERA and a 3.84 FIP in 10 innings pitched. On Thursday, he was sent to Triple-A Buffalo so the Blue Jays could get a fresh arm (Yerry Rodríguez) in the pen.
The bullpen’s depth will likely continue to be whittled down over the next few days. Trevor Richards is on an expiring contract and will likely be traded before Tuesday’s trade deadline. Realistically, Génesis Cabrera could be traded as well, as he’s had a good season with team control remaining. The market for relievers is great, and the Blue Jays should capitalize on it.
