A former Toronto Blue Jays’ 2025 top 30 prospect has officially called it a career.
Right-handed pitcher Ryan Jennings announced via his Instagram account that he was retiring from professional baseball.
Jennings was originally drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 MLB Draft after two years at Louisiana Tech University. The 26-year-old made it as high as Triple-A within the Blue Jays’ organization before ultimately deciding to call it quits.
After being drafted, Jennings instantly flashed his potential in his first five career games in Single-A with the Dunedin Blue Jays. Working out of the bullpen, Jennings went 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in his first 8.1 innings pitched.
Jennings opened the following year in Dunedin and was eventually promoted to High-A, joining the Vancouver Canadians after 33 innings pitched. Once again, Jennings took the promotion to the next level in stride, turning in a 2.70 ERA over three starts with the Canadians.
The 2024 season that followed was a special one for Jennings. After recording a 2.13 ERA over 11 starts with the Canadians, a stretch which included 56 strikeouts over 50.2 innings, Jennings was rewarded with another promotion, this time to Double-A with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
Jennings pitched in 10 games with the Fisher Cats to close out the 2024 season. In those outings, Jennings posted a 0.90 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and picked up two saves. Jennings struck out 12 batters and held opposing teams to a .135 average against, earning him the 2024 Blue Jays Minor League Pitcher of the Year. After his successful 2024 season, Jennings was listed as the Blue Jays 22nd-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline on the 2025 edition of the rankings.
To open the 2025 season, Jennings returned to New Hampshire, and the results continued to impress. In 11 outings, Jennings went 3-1 with a 2.86 ERA and 1.36 WHIP and once again slowed down opposing lineups, holding opposing batters to a .200 average against. On May 16, 2025, Jennings was promoted to Triple-A Buffalo as the Blue Jays felt Jennings was getting closer to a debut.
Jennings pitched in 34 games with the Bisons last season and went 1-3 with a 4.25 ERA and 1.89 WHIP. Jennings flashed high strikeout potential, setting down 54 batters via the punchout across his 36 frames. This came following spring training, where Jennings posted a 1.93 ERA over 4.2 innings pitched.
After appearing in two games with the Blue Jays during the 2026 spring training, Jennings was optioned to Buffalo on March 27 and opened the year on the 7-day injured list. Jennings had yet to appear in a game this season before deciding to retire officially.
Jennings wraps up his professional career with a 7-13 record, 3.07 ERA and 1.37 WHIP over 83 games (22 starts). Jennings finishes with two saves and 170 innings pitched, for a career that spanned four seasons.
