The Toronto Blue Jays have added additional length to their pitching staff at the expense of a bat.
The Blue Jays balanced their roster on Tuesday by recalling right-hander Chad Dallas from Triple-A, with Yohendrick Pinango being optioned as the corresponding roster move, the team announced.
It was anticipated that the Blue Jays would add a pitcher and option a position player after George Springer rejoined the Blue Jays’ roster from the family emergency medical list on Monday, and with Braydon Fisher being placed on the bereavement list, giving the roster an unbalanced 14 position players and 12 pitchers. With this move, they’re now back at an even split.
Dallas made his MLB debut — and lone appearance for the Blue Jays — in a 7-2 win over the Atlanta Braves on June 4. The right-hander allowed four baserunners and one run over 3.2 innings while notching a pair of strikeouts.
Dallas, 26, has a 3.62 ERA with 48 strikeouts and 18 walks over 49.2 innings for the Bisons this season.
Piñango had a hot start to his MLB career, leading the Blue Jays in wRC+ over a third of the way into the season, but he has regressed since. He’s struggled in particular over the last 15 games, going on a 6-for-41 stretch at the plate for a .146/.222/.268 slash line.
And the 24-year-old rookie’s diminishing offence has only been compounded by his unsustainable defence. He has a minus-4 fielding run value that accurately reflects his frequent gaffes in the outfield. It was Piñango’s second time being optioned this season, and he still has multiple minor-league options remaining.
It stands to reason that Dallas could provide bulk innings for the Blue Jays behind standout rule-5 pick Spencer Miles — who is set to make his third career start on Tuesday night against the San Francisco Giants — considering he’s stretched out to 70 pitches.
