For much of the 2026 regular season, the Toronto Blue Jays have been forced to use bullpen days to cover multiple spots in their rotation, but Tuesday night’s starter in San Francisco could be the answer in both the short and long run.
The Blue Jays will turn to right-hander Spencer Miles as they look to snap their three-game losing skid. After being selected in the Rule 5 Draft from the Giants organization, Miles has done nothing but impress during his first season in the majors.
Through 24 games (two starts) this season, Miles is 4-1 with a 2.83 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. The 25-year-old has shown no fear when squaring off against opposing teams, using his power sinker, which averages 96.1 MPH, to keep batters in check. Through 54 innings pitched, Miles has struck out 55 batters and possesses one of the most powerful arms on the Blue Jays’ roster.
In his career, Miles has made two starts, with each having varying results. In his first start against the Los Angeles Angels on May 10, Miles turned in a pitching line of 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, and required only 38 pitches to work through his three frames.
The second start came on May 31 against the Baltimore Orioles, which was Miles’ toughest outing of his tenure with the Blue Jays. Miles once again went three innings, but the pitching line was 3.0 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, and was tagged for a three-run home run by Colton Cowser.
Miles earned himself this opportunity with the effort he displayed on Canada Day during the Blue Jays’ 9-3 win over the New York Mets. After Braydon Fisher opened with a scoreless first inning, Miles proceeded to enter and completely lock down the Mets’ offence for the following three innings. Miles allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out five Mets to pick up his fourth win of the season and help throw his name into consideration for the fifth starter’s role in the Blue Jays’ rotation.
While Miles only got to 46 pitches in that outing, the righty has reached as high as 73, which came on June 6 during a 6-4 win over the Orioles. With Patrick Corbin and Max Scherzer’s notable struggles in 2026, Miles represents the best current option to give the Blue Jays quality in their rotation as they are starting to run out of time to turn this ship around.
