The Toronto Blue Jays have added a speedster to their lineup ahead of Wednesday’s contest versus the New York Yankees, selecting the contract of outfielder Cam Eden.
Eden, a sixth-round selection by Toronto in 2019, was added to the organization’s 40 and 26-man rosters prior to first pitch on Wednesday. To make room, infielder Mason McCoy was designated for assignment while Ernie Clement was optioned to triple-A Buffalo.
The 25-year-old outfielder stole 53 bases in 57 attempts with the Bisons this season. He didn’t provide much offensive value, hitting just three home runs with a .257/.354/.333 slash line and an 81 wRC+ in 131 games, but is considered a plus-defender.
Eden spent most of his reps in centre field, logging 737.0 innings across 91 appearances. But he also split time in both corners, compiling 216.2 innings in right and 39.0 innings in left.
Clement provided a much-needed spark in Bo Bichette’s absence and remained productive even after he returned, slashing .380/.385/.500 with a 144 wRC+ in limited opportunities over 30 games.
By designating McCoy for assignment, the Blue Jays have seven days to find a trade, place him outright or unconditional release waivers. If he passes through, the 28-year-old can be permitted to be optioned to the minor leagues.
The Blue Jays currently hold the second AL wild-card seed at 84-67, with 11 games remaining in the regular season – 10 following Wednesday’s affair at Yankee Stadium.
